The Makeup Show LA 2015

by Angie Davis

The  Makeup Show is a pro only show that travels all over the United States offering it's attendees discounts on makeup and educational seminars and lectures. This year the Los Angeles show was held at the California Market Center on March 27, 28 and 29th. The show brought out some of world's best artists and nurtured a teaching atmosphere which the show is best known for. donaldrobertson2 The Donald Robertson Icon gallery drew quite a crowd of admirers. Robertson's illustrative style captures color and shape in a way that easily translates to fashion and merchandising. donaldrobertson Friday night kicked off the weekend of events with the blogger preview and the opening of the Icon gallery. James Vincent addressed the crowd with a talk about the history of the show, a rundown of all the speakers and list of some of his favorite products in his kit. After the blogger preview the Icon Gallery preview began featuring work from Ellis Faas and the Andy Warhol of Instagram Donald Robertson. The gallery featured some of Ellis' most iconic images which all featured her signature color, red. It was a delightful night full of makeup and inspiration. ellis1ellis2 Saturday is perhaps the busiest day and it's for good reason, there is a lot to pack in to the eight hour day. As soon as you walk in you notice a huge amount of vendors and they are all busy. There are too many to list but a nice mix of high profile companies mixed with the newer indie companies line the event space. As you weave your way through you will find several stages with makeup demos going on. Further back disconnected from the main show you will find the main keynote stage. Uncover spent a large amount of time here on Saturday listening to Fiona Stiles and Ellis Faas. Fiona Stiles is a celebrity makeup artist that works mainly on red carpets and special events. Fiona spoke on her various techniques for creating a red carpet glow as she demonstrated on a model. She mentioned using eight hour cream on top of the cheekbones as a natural cheek highlight. She also created a very minimal makeup look and took it up a notch by adding gloss to the lid. She offered a lot of helpful application tips. Next Ellis Faas took the stage and was interviewed by James Vincent. Ellis is a true artist in the sense that she creates because she has to. Her banter with James was endearing. She talked about her products and how long she took to develop each one. She also briefly mentioned how she came to work with some of the best photographers in the world to become what Vogue Paris called one of the most influential makeup artists of our time. As I listened to her speak with her art hanging in the gallery to the right it was quite inspiring to see a true artist. One of the best things about the Makeup Show is the chance to test out products and get pro discounts. With a 30% discount it's no wonder that NARS was one of the most popular booths. The check out line wrapped around the entire booth at one point. Another great booth was Nigel's Beauty Emporium. They had really great deals on eyelashes as well as Z Palettes. Another not to miss booth was Besame where artist Jason Adcock did a black and white flapper demo and the brand debuted their new mascara in a tube. Dollup also has a nice booth selling their portable vanity cases. Think of a Z palette mixed with a clutch and that is Dollup.besame makeupdemo Sunday is definitely a more chill day. There seems to be less excitement in the air and everyone is more interested in catching a lecture than buying makeup. On the mainstage Makeup Forever sponsored an open question and answer session with three of their top artists: James Vincent, Will Lemon and Melanie Inglessis. Each artist spoke truthfully on their humble beginnings, the amazing projects they've worked on and some of their favorite products. They also offered advice on how to minimize your kit and how to act professionally on set. roshartmstms2 The Makeup Show is not to be missed!
